List of Preserved Steam and Diesel Locomotives at Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW)

[1] KUNDAN( YB: 3rd January 1964)

 

Heritage Diesel Locomotive – Kundan (WDM2-18233) :

The first BLW built Broad Gauge WDM2 locomotive no. 18233 was flagged-off by ShriLalBahadurShastri on 3rd January 1964. The locomotive was then homed at Howrah diesel shed. It worked initially on freight service. Thereafter, it hauled the prestigious Kalka Mail and Amritsar Mail. It was transferred to Bardhman Diesel Shed in 1977. It worked there till the dawn of the new millennium. In 2004, it was shifted to Mughalsarai shed.

The locomotives had two 3-axle tri-mount type Co-Co bogies.

The locomotive was powered with a 251-B type, 16-cylinder, turbo charged, 4-stroke diesel engine capable of developing 2636 HP under SAE standard climatic conditions. The power transmission was electric, consisting of one DC main generator, Exciter and Auxiliary generator. The transmission included 6 DC traction motors, geared for a maximum speed of 120 kmph. Compressed air brake for locomotive and vacuum brake system for the train was provided. This 50-year-old locomotive has now been decommissioned and is permanent exhibit at Central Market, BLW as heritage of Indian Railways.

 

[2] Miss Muffet  (YB: 1935-Narrow Gauge Steam Locomotive)

Heritage Steam Locomotive – Miss Muffet (2-4-0T):

Miss Muffet is the smallest steam locomotive ever used in the country barely the size of a small lorry.

It was manufactured by W.G. Bangal Ltd. Castle Engine Works, U.K. It was on the line in 1935 with a maximum rolling speed of 13 mph. Its coal capacity was 10 cwt and the water tank capacity of 260 gallons, when fully loaded it weighed 11.80 tones.

The heritage steam locomotive is on display in the front of BLW Administrative Office.

 

[3] Hercules (YB: 1908 Steam Locomotive)

Heritage Steam Locomotive – Hercules (0-4-0 WT):

Hercules was manufactured by M/s Nasmyth Wilson & Co, Patricroft, Manchester, UK in 1908.  

It was used for shop shunting at Jamalpur Workshop. A silver chimney crowns its boiler head.

The Locomotive is  7440 mm long, 2410 mm in width and 4110 mm in height.

Its total weight is 23 tonnes, water capacity 2272 litres having one tonne of coal also.

The heritage steam locomotive is on display in the front of BLW Administrative Office.

 

[4] Mahalaxmi  (YB: 1944-WDS1 Diesel Locomotive)

 Heritage Diesel Locomotive – Mahalaxmi:    

 Mahalaxmi, the Broad gauge  diesel locomotive, was manufactured by M/s General Electric Company,                   U.S.A. in 1944, costing Rs. 1,86,900/- approximately.

The engine was provided by M/s  Cater Pillar Tractor Co., U.S.A.

 It is of 10331 mm in length, 2743 mm in width and 3760 mm in height. Its fuel capacity is 946 litres and

 total weight 46 tonnes.

 It was utilized in yard shunting and as goods pilot in Bombay area.

 This heritage diesel locomotive is on display in the front of BLW Administrative Office.

 

[5] Locomotive No. 6073 (YB- 1960*    YDM3 Meter  Gauge Diesel Electric )

This YDM3 Class MG Diesel Locomotive was homed at Sabarmati Diesel Shed, WR.  The locomotive was manufactured by M/s GM-EMD, USA.

It was powered by single 12-cylinders, 2-stroke EMD 567C type diesel engine capable of developing 1390 hp at 800 RPM under SAE standard conditions.

The locomotive was equipped with Electric Transmission consisting of one EMD make D-25 Direct Current main generator and two EMU make D 69 MC direct current.

This heritage diesel locomotive is on display in the front of BLW Cinema Hall.

[6] Locomotive No 6074  (YB-1960*   YDM3 Meter Gauge Diesel Electric)

This YDM3 Class MG Diesel Locomotive was homed at Sabarmati Diesel Shed, WR.  The locomotive was manufactured by M/s GM-EMD, USA.

It was powered by single 12-cylinders, 2-stroke EMD 567C type diesel engine capable of developing 1390 hp at 800 RPM under SAE standard conditions.

The locomotive was equipped with Electric Transmission consisting of one EMD make D-25 Direct Current main generator and two EMU make D 69 MC direct current.

This heritage diesel locomotive is on display in the front of BLW EDP Centre.

[7] Locomotive No. 6098 (YB-1964*  YDM5 Meter Gauge Diesel Electric)

This 5th generation YDM5 Class MG Diesel Locomotive was homed at Sabarmati Diesel Shed, WR.  The locomotive was manufactured by M/s GM-EMD, USA.

The locomotive was powered by a single 12-cylinders, 2-stroke EMD 567C type diesel engine capable of developing 1390 hp at 800 RPM under SAE standard conditions.

The locomotive was equipped with Electric Transmission consisting of one EMD make D-25 Direct Current main generator and two EMU make D 69 MC direct current.

This heritage diesel locomotive is on display in the front of BLW Design Office.

23 April 1956 : Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Hon’ble President of India was laying the foundation stone of Banaras Locomotive Works ( earlier known as Diesel Locomotive Woks, Varanasi)

 

03.01.1964: Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri was dedicating the first BLW manufactured WDM2 BG Locomotive ( 18233) to Nation.

This 50-year-old locomotive has now been decommissioned and is permanent exhibit at Central Market, BLW as heritage of Indian Railways.

 

22.11.1968:  Shri Morarji Desai, Dy Prime Minister of India was dedicating first BLW manufactured YDM4 class Diesel MG locomotive (6199)  to Nation.
